This course was developed to enhance your understanding of addiction and its impact on family members and provide you with strategies and tools to help individuals and family members start on the road to recovery. This course is designed to meet half the training requirements for the Certificate in Spiritual Caregiving to Help Addicted Persons and Families and provides three (3) education contact hours.

Helping Children and Youth of Addicted Parents is designed for those who are interested in promoting resilience and providing support to the one in four children who live in families with a parent with an alcohol or drug use disorder. These millions of children, who suffer in silence, can be helped by many adults in the community ranging from teachers, to early childhood professionals, to social workers, to attorneys, to youth workers, and relatives. This course provides basic information about children of addicted parents and strategies that can be used to help them become more resilient. Completing this course is a requirement for the Certificate in Working with Children of Addicted Parents. If you are applying for the Certificate in Working with Children of Addicted Parents, please print out the completion certificate at the end of the course and include that with your application.

This online course, Preventing Alcohol and Drug Problems: A Course for Clergy, provides information on practical steps you can take to help the children and youth in your congregation and community. The intent of this course is to enhance your knowledge and skills about prevention of alcohol and drug abuse. The content of this course is based on the handbook "Preventing and Addressing Alcohol and Drug Problems: A Handbook for Clergy," published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The course should take you approximately three (3) hours to complete including all the resource materials accessable from the course.
